Explorer Camp

Explorer Camp 2018 will take place on HMS BRISTOL from Sunday 21st October until Saturday 27th October.

We are now accepting applications for Explorers and Adults.  Bid forms can be found at the bottom of this page, but please read all relevant information before applying.

There is no availability for accommodation onboard HMS Bristol Saturday 20th October for adults or young people.

Explorers are to arrive between 1300 and 1600 on Sunday.  Departure is approximately 1000 to 1030 on Saturday.

Meals will be provided from Sunday dinner through to Saturday breakfast inclusive.  Optionally, a packed lunch can be provided before departure on the Saturday.

Explorers

Explorers Sea Scouts must be invested members of an Explorer Unit which holds a partnership agreement with an RN Recognised Sea Scout Troop.

Accommodation is on-board HMS BRISTOL.  More information about HMS Bristol can be found here.

Explorers can apply for either an activities camp which includes a different activity each day, or a range of courses.  It is strongly recommended that Explorers attend the activity camp rather than a course if it is their first time aboard.

Places on courses are usually very limited.  It is unlikely that groups will be allocated more than one place on each course, irrespective of the size of the request.

You will need to make your own arrangements for transportation, although we are able to offer collection from Portsmouth and Southsea Train Station.  Deposits are required as described below.

Activities Camp RYA Competent Crew Course

The activity camp allows Explorers to experience a variety of different activities, changing each day.  Explorers will be grouped into divisions of around 15.

Activities may include:

  • Dinghy Sailing
  • Yachting
  • Powerboat day trips
  • Kayaking
  • Other outdoor adventurous activities

By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day duties on board. You should also have visited some interesting places and had an enjoyable experience.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

This course may be restricted to applicants of a single gender depending on demand.

Paddle Discover/2* Course Powerboating Course

Focusing on developing your technique, skills and knowledge further, all in a fun and flexible way.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

This entry level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Safety Boat Course

This course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, or for racing or training activities.

Minimum age 16 at course start.  Must hold an RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification, a copy of which will be requested by the course lead in advance. Applicants must be competent helms with at least a season of experience on the water, preferably as a powerboat helm or crew, evidence of which should be provided in the form of a log or diary.  An RYA First Aid qualification will be included with this course.

Beginners Dinghy Sailing Course RYA Dinghy Seamanship Course

For Explorers  to gain up to stage 4 of the RYA youth Sailing Scheme, aimed at improving confidence and get time on the water.

There are no prerequisites for this course, but complete novices would need to be keen to learn.

How to handle a boat in all circumstances and solve problems afloat.

Requires a minimum of RYA stage 3 and for participants to have reasonable confidence sailing on their own.

Adults

There are a wide range of roles are available for Adult Leaders.  We are happy to consider applications from all leaders, regardless of section or appointment held.

Adults must be over 18 years of age at the start of the event and hold a current appointment with a RN Recognised Sea Scout Group or be a current member of the ALNSASU.

If you have not visited HMS EXCELLENT before, then you will need to complete a Basic Assurance form. This needs to be sent directly to the Royal Navy from your group contact, and must be received by the Royal Navy 3 clear weeks prior to the event.  You can download this here, please follow the enclosed instructions carefully.

Please read all of the information below before submitting any forms.  The management team are busy Scout leaders like everyone else, so it is very important that you follow the instructions below.

Deadline for Bid Forms and Deposit Payments

This form only requests the number of places you wish to bid for.  We do not need to know details of the individuals concerned at this stage.  Do not bid speculatively: We will expect that you can fill all the places you are allocated.

Deposits of are required £30 per place.  Payment must by made by this date.  If we cannot allocate you a place that you have requested, we will refund your deposit.

PLACES WILL NOT BE ALLOCATED UNTIL YOUR DEPOSIT IS RECEIVED, WITHOUT EXCEPTION.

Suggested latest completion date for Adult Registrations

There is an expectation that groups attending will provide adult support to the event.  Without adult leaders across all the teams, the event couldn’t run!

Each adult attending will need to fill in an online form. We ask that each leader fills in their own form to ensure the data is correct. Feel free to forward this page to your adult leaders so they can fill the form in.

Completing your form early allows the management team to work our what resources we have, and can lead to more young people being offered their places.

Allocation of Places

You will be informed by email during this week.

We will send out confirmation forms which will request the details of those attending the event.  Payment of the outstanding balance will be requested.

If we are unable to confirm any places requested, we will maintain a reserve list.  If additional places become available, we will contact you.

 

 

2359, 30th September 2018

Deadline for Confirmation Forms and Full Payment

Online confirmation forms must be completed by this time, and full payment must be received.

Any groups who fail to comply with this requirement will forfeit their places and deposits paid.

There will be no refund of any monies paid after this point.

Deadline for Adult Registration

As above.  This is the absolute deadline.
